What Are Franchise Resales?

A franchise resale is an existing franchised business being sold by the person who currently runs it. The territory, the equipment, the staff and the customer base transfer with it, and so does the trading history — which means you can examine real numbers before you commit rather than relying on projections. Sales are subject to the franchisor approving you as an incoming owner, and the price is negotiated with the seller rather than set by the brand.

Is a Franchise Resale Right for You?

Want revenue from day one rather than a ramp-up

Would rather examine real accounts than projections

Are comfortable inheriting staff and existing customers

Value a local reputation that is already established

May be less ideal if you:

Have a specific territory or city in mind

Prefer to build systems and a team your own way

Want the widest choice of brands and locations

Are not prepared for a higher upfront purchase price

Frequently asked questions

A resale is an existing business being sold by its current owner, with staff, customers and trading history in place. A new franchise is a territory released by the brand and never operated before. Resales give you revenue sooner; new franchises give you more choice of location.

Most commonly retirement, relocation, or a move into a different business — but it is the first question to ask, and the answer should be consistent with what the accounts show. A seller who is leaving for personal reasons and one who is leaving because the territory underperforms are two very different purchases.

Yes. Every resale is conditional on the brand approving you as an incoming franchisee, and you will normally sign a current franchise agreement rather than inherit the seller's. That agreement may differ from the one the seller signed, so read it as a new document.

By the seller, usually as a multiple of earnings and informed by what comparable businesses have sold for. Unlike a new franchise, where the brand sets the investment, a resale price is negotiable — and the trading records give you the evidence to negotiate with.
